This is a nice example of the Model of 1825 Cuirass used by the eponymously named Cuirassiers. It is primarily of steel, affixed with brass rivets at the edges as well as two protruding brass studs near the top of the breastplate that are used for affixing the chain straps which connect it to the backplate. The chains straps are of brass and are connected to attachment plates at their ends which are stamped with holes for the chest studs to pass through. The underside of the attachment plates have leather pads under the rivets which helps to both keep them safe and grip the breastplate.

The underside of the breastplate bears an engraving which indicates manufacture at the Royal Manufactory in Klingenthal in the year 1828. Klingenthal was an important arms manufacturing region in Alsace, though just a few years after this armor’s creation the Royal Manufactory lost its royal status as the French government moved arms production further from the German border.

H: 16 1/4 in., (41.3 cm.)

Condition: Good condition overall, with mild surface rust throughout. Chain links are intact. Leather is slightly worn but in very good condition for its age.
