AUCTION 45: ANTIQUE ARMS AND ARMOR
Lot 177:
A hunting dagger in the German style with an accompanying skinning knife. The blade of the dagger has a fuller running down either side, and ends in a ‘spear-point’ tip. The ricasso bears an inscription that we have yet to identify. The hilt is beautifully decorated with gilt-brass fittings and a stag-horn grip. The guard has both a clamshell decorated with the image of a stag laying in a wood, as well as quillons in the shape of hound’s heads. The scabbard has similarly decorated gilt-brass fittings on a leather-wrapped wooden core. The accompanying skinning knife is plain by comparison but still finely done and also has a stag-horn grip.
L: 20.75 in. (52.71 cm.);
Condition: Very good overall with minor signs of wear.
