AUCTION 45: ANTIQUE ARMS AND ARMOR
Lot 208:
Shashka with scabbard, East Transcaucasia, 1850s-1860s.
These types of swords were ordered by officers of the Russian Imperial Army serving in the Caucasus.
The silver mounts are decorated with a niello floral motif. The blade spine is embellished with a gold inlay. There is an ineligible Arabic inscription on the forte. The blade features one wide groove on each side and two smaller narrower grooves. The pommel is of characteristic eared form. The scabbard is constructed of two wooden scales covered in stitched black leather.
L: 47 1/2 in., (105 cm.)
Condition: The sword is in good condition with expected signs of wear and age.
