Buyer's premium:

This Austro-Hungarian sabre, known as a ‘szablya’ in Hungarian, is beautifully decorated with bronze fittings and mother-of-pearl grips. The guard has two engraved quillons, one being downturned, and the other being upturned, and the center of the guard bears the ‘doppeladler’ of the Kingdom of Austria-Hungary with the coat of arms of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. The pommel is capped with a finely molded Lion’s head with filigree engraving beneath it.

The chape, locket, and central band of the scabbard are all finely chased and stippled and show floral and filigree imagery. The leather of the scabbard shows only minor wear and is broadly in great condition.

The single-edged blade, apart from some very minor pitting at its base, is in wonderful condition. It is shaped, as is the handle, in the traditional style of a Hungarian ‘szablya’, with a strong curve and a flat spine that tapers just before the point for more efficient penetration.

L: 40.5 in. (102.87 cm.);

Condition: Extremely good condition overall with only minor signs of age. Please refer to the images provided.
