A French model of 1874 bayonet designed for use with the Fusil Gras which was the standard issue rifle of the French Army at the time. The back of the blade bears the cursive inscription ‘Mre d’ Armes de St-Étienne’ indicating its place of manufacture. The guard is marked with many small stamps and bears the serial number ‘90491’. The backstrap is marked ‘M27’. The construction is the usual design with an upturned iron guard, wood grip scales, and brass pommel with an attachment point for the rifle.
