AUCTION 45: ANTIQUE ARMS AND ARMOR
Lot 228:
A late Renaissance long rapier, complete with a clamshell guard and ‘S’ curved quillons and a copper wire-wrapped grip with metal Turk’s-head knotwork at either end, finished by an egg-shaped pommel bearing two stylized faces. The Damascus steel blade is interestingly decorated with three gilt fullers on each side, pierced with various geometric patterns and engraved with delicate scrollwork along the edge.
Italy, 17th cen.
L: 38 1/4 in., (97.2 cm.)
Condition: Good overall, with some rust on the iron fittings and some fading to the gilding of the blade. Parts are all tight, including the wire wrap on the grip.
