FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE 20TH CENTURY
Lot 74:
A large pewter tankard of a slightly tapering cylindrical shape set atop three round, hollow feet. The piece is topped with a lid surmounted by a large, decorated shield incised with a German phrase, the name Johan Mathias, and the year 1811. The phrase probably refers to the piece as a gift to the aforementioned Johan Mathias. The lid is held to the piece via a large hinge connected to the curved handle. The underside is marked with old collector’s marks.
Germany – CA. 1811
H: 12 1/2 in., (31.75 cm.)
Condition: Good for age. Some dents and knicks throughout. Lid still swivels well. Two of three feet somewhat bent.
