FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE 20TH CENTURY
Lot 79:
An antique moon phase chronograph desk clock with a calendar set within a silver-plated racehorse hoof-shaped base, identified as such by the slender horseshoe of a style used by racehorses. The face is white enameled with black Roman numerals and red month marks. There are three separate dials on the face for tracking different inputs: numerical day of the month, days of the week, and seconds in the day. Under the 12th Roman numeral is a revolving sheet to represent the phases of the moon. The interior of the hoof houses the clockwork mechanisms. A mark ‘784’ is seen on the edge of the bottom of the hoof. Possibly French or Swiss origin as the Months and Days of the week are written in the French language.
France or Switzerland – CA 19th Century
H: 3 1/4 in., (8.3 cm.)
Condition: Good overall. Silver tarnished in places. Watch face clean and clear. All mechanisms seem to function well.
