This French mantle, key wound clock was designed in the Empire style that was popularly seen in France from the 19th to 20th centuries. Empire style originated from the rule of Emperor Napoleon and was intended to idealize his leadership and the French state. Mantel clocks in this style would often be made of ormolu (a gold-colored alloy of copper, zinc, and tin) with Greek figures depicting specific people, gods, or mythological scenes. This example maintains its original ormolu with floral motifs throughout piece. Its Greek figures portray two Ottoman characters dressed in typical garb (tunics, turbans, a sash holding a curved dagger) resting atop an animal skin rug, possibly a lion, the male figure holding out an intricate cloth.
