This Pahari painting depicts a scene from the devotional text Devi Mahatmya. Pahari paintings were made by the artists of Himalayan ?ountain ?ingdoms. Here Devi Durga riding on the lion-killing demon Mahisasur. Mahisasur takes the form of a man from buffalo but Durga cuts him to shreds with arrows and breaks his sword and shield. This is Goddess Durga’s war on evil. Devi means Goddess in Sanskrit. Durga is the mother goddess in the Hindu pantheon. She is depicted as having multiple arms allowing her to protect all from every direction. Here Durga is in her full battle mode, arms swirling, hands clasping and an array of weapons and demons falling to bloody death. Also saw Garuda the giant bird carrying Vishnu and Lakshmi watching the battle. Yoginis and Bhairavas help her in her battle.
