An attractive wheel-thrown pottery cosmetics container, known as a lekanis, often given by fathers to brides on their wedding day. The vessel bears a squat foot, a hemispherical body with a deep basin, and a thin rim with a pair of parabolic handles just beneath. A raised ridge along the rim enables a secure fit for the accompanying lid, and the discoid handle allows for the effortless removal of the lid. The body and lid are enveloped in lustrous black glaze, and reserved areas are visible atop the lid handle and beneath the foot of the body.

Ancient Greece — 4th-2nd century BC.

H: 4 1/2 in., (11.5 cm.); L: 8 1/4 in., (21 cm.)

Condition: Good overall. Chipping and glaze fading throughout. A section of the inner rim is missing near one of the handles. See photos for reference.
