AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024
Lot 107:
This armet helmet is possibly of Italian origin and a later armet design. The visors and chin piece are connected to the same joint and separate from the skull piece, which was a design that originated in England and then became the standard of all later armets (this displaced the armet a rondel). The skull piece and chin piece separate to allow the wearer ease in donning the helmet, and are attached with a clasp on the bottom right. The visor has two independent pieces: the lower piece could be secured with a hook providing additional protection to the chinpiece, while the upper portion provided the eye ports and a single prong to move the piece up and down.
Italy – 15th/16th Century.
10 3/4 in., (27.25 cm.)
Condition: Very good overall. Signs of age and wear. Dents and chipping in places. Signs of rust in the interior.
