AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024
Lot 135:
This 18th-century shield was iron forged with a covering along and around the rim, possibly leather. The front is reinforced with iron bars and covered with decorative coin washers. The domed center features iron rivets that protrude outward with coin washers at the base of each. The back of the shield has ten iron loops where the grip can be attached and adjusted depending upon the wielder. The small size and relatively heavy weight presumably mean this shield would have been used to guard against blows and offensively to punch an opponent.
Asia, 18th century.
D: 10 1/8 in., (25.8 cm.)
Condition: Very good considering the age.
