AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024

A MATCHED SET OF CHINESE JIAN SWORDS IN ONE SCABBARD, 19TH CEN.

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: $200

Estimated price: $300 - $400

Buyer's premium:

A matching pair of Chinese jian swords held in a single scabbard. The swords are detailed only on the outwardly facing side, while the reverse lacks shape and decoration. For instance, each sword blade is beveled on one side, and flat on the other. The brass guards are engraved with what appears to be a depiction of a moth on one side, but there is no guard on the other side of the blade. Because of these things, it appears that the reverse side of the blades is not meant to be seen. The handle is wrapped in leather with a red lacquer over it and is finished with a brass pommel, similarly decorated on the front only. The scabbard has brass fittings along its entire length, with three simply engraved bands in addition to the locket and chape.

China, 19th Century.

L: 30 1/2 in., (77.47 cm.)

Condition: Good with expected signs of wear.
