AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024
Lot 394:
An 18th-century Turkish Yatagan with brass mounts and silver inlaid. A common weapon among the Janissaries and other soldiers of the Ottoman Empire, the yatagans were small, light swords with no hilt guards and two iconic "wings, " or "ears, " spread out from the pommel to prevent the blade from slipping out of the hand during battle. This example’s hilt has large "ears" (common among Balkan designs) and is made from wooden material. The hilt is attached via nails to the brass mount, which is intricately decorated and wraps up to the base of the blade.
Ottoman Empire – 18th century.
L: 29 1/2 in., (75 cm.)
Condition: Good overall. Expected wear and age throughout. Brass is slightly loose from the split on the handle. Scabbard is missing.
