AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024
Лот 229:
A lot of 2 Roman Gladii with scabbards and a scabbard chape.
#1 — A Roman gladius with a leather hilt and horizontal crossguard. The blade is possibly a Fulham gladius style and rests inside a heavy scabbard with brass mounts.
#2 — A chape for a Roman gladius scabbard. The chapel was the protective fitting at the bottom of the scabbard. This example is made of brass and adorned with the depiction of a Roman legionnaire, possibly an aquilifer (eagle-bearer), as he is in full armor and armament and bearing the eagle standard.
# 3 — A Roman gladius with a wooden hilt. The blade is possibly a Pompeii gladius style and rests within a scabbard with leather wrapping and brass mounts.
L: 27 1/4 in., (69 cm.)
Condition: Good overall. The first gladius is missing a brass mount on the scabbard and the leather handle is degrading. Chips and dents in places throughout both Gladius items.
