AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024
Лот 233:
A Russian hunting dagger manufactured in the famed metalworking city of Tula in 1857. The blade is wide, curved, and well-balanced, with a wide fuller running down both sides. The guard and handle are primarily of steel with gilding throughout. The clamshell of the guard is chased with a depiction of a stag being attacked by hounds in a forest. The handle is a tapered cylinder with stippling throughout as well as foliate scrollwork in the center on both sides and ending in a semi-spherical pommel.
The black leather scabbard is affixed with metal mounts decorated similarly to the guard, including a chased depiction of Artemis hunting alongside a hound and beautiful foliate scrollwork throughout. Set within a smaller sheath in the scabbard is a utility or eating knife with a simpler but well-crafted bone handle.
Tula, Russia, 1857.
L: 24 in., (61 cm.)
Condition: Some minor surface oxidation throughout, including some light staining on the blade. All parts are tight. Some wear to gilding on the scabbard.
