AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024
Лот 361:
A French Artilleryman’s steel double-edged shortsword, akin to a gladius, a Roman shortsword. The blade features three fullers on each side: two small ones near the blade hilt, and a third longer fuller along the middle toward the tip. The eagle-headed, brass pommel continued the Roman motif as the eagle was a prominent symbol in Roman society. Two manufacturer’s marks can be seen on the item: one on the blade near the hilt and the second on the underside of the eagle’s beak. The marks are partially obscured but appear to belong to the Royal Weapons Manufactory at Klingenthal.
France, ca. 1770.
L: 24 1/5 in., (62.2 cm.)
Condition: Good overall, the blade is scratched but retains its original form. The scabbard is missing. The Pommel and hilt are loose.
