AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024
Лот 368:
A mid-19th century American smallsword created by W. H. Horstmann and Sons, the largest supplier of military goods to the United States during the Civil War. The sword is highly decorated with an engraved blade showing various foliate decorations, patriotic symbols, and ‘U.S.’ at the strong of the blade. The bronze guard of the sword is a clamshell style, with half of it being decorated with the American Eagle bearing a shield and surrounded by flags, and the other half being plain but attached via a hinge so that it can swivel downwards for more comfortable carry. The grip is of shagreen with wrapped wire spiraling down its length. The pommel is decorated similarly to the guard.
America — Mid-19th Century.
L: 35 in., (88.9 cm.)
Condition: Good overall with surface light pitting across much of the blade. The handle shows expected signs of wear with some minor loss to the shagreen grip. The hinged clamshell guard still swivels well.
