This brilliantly made court sword was produced by W. Clauberg of Solingen, a prolific swordsmith of mid to late 19th-century Europe. Clauberg was probably most famous for his swords made for export to the US, many of which were used during the US Civil War. This particular example was likely made for a client in Europe and is decorated with a cipher consisting of two intertwined and mirrored ‘C’s below a crown on the clamshell guard as well as additional crowns on the pommel.

The blade is marked on one side of the forte with a depiction of a helmeted knight’s head and on the other side of the forte with the text ‘W. Clauberg a Solingen’. The gilt and beautifully chased hilt is affixed with mother-of-pearl grip scales and the black leather scabbard is mounted with brass fixtures, including a fleur de lis hook for attaching to a frog.

Europe, 19th Century.

L: 37 1/4 in., (94.5 cm.)

Condition: Very good overall, the gilding has partially faded, the scabbard leather shows cracks, and the blade is slightly pitted. Reverse grip scale with a thin crack. All parts are tight. The sword is complete and has not been restored.
