Arbit Blatas, Lithuanian, French, 1908 to 1999, collection of eleven lithographs on paper depicting portraits of the famous French mime and actor Marcel Marceau, from the series, Mimas Marselis Marso, 1960. Arbit Blatas, born Nicolai Arbitblatas, was an artist and sculptor of Lithuanian Jewish descent. Mr. Blatas, a Lithuanian-born member of the School of Paris, attended the operas’ premiere in Berlin in 1928 and based his paintings on a 1950s revival at the Theater de Lys in Greenwich Village. The production starred Weill’s widow, Lotte Lenya, and included Ed Asner, Jerry Orbach, Jerry Stiller and Jo Sullivan Loesser. Many of the actors are recognizable in the paintings.
