Estimated price: $3,500 - $4,000

Buyer's premium:

Katharina Heise (German, 1891 – 1964), a cast bronze sculpture of a nude prayer. Raised on a hexagonal base and a round socle.

Katharina Heise was born in 1891 in Gross Salze. She worked under the male pseudonym Karl Luis Heinrich-Salze until 1931. In addition to her graphic works, which she produced for the magazine "Die Aktion", she was particularly successful with her expressionist sculptures. Heise studied at the applied arts school in Magdeburg and attended Ferdinand Dorsch’s painting school in Dresden in 1911/12, where she had contacts with the artist group "Die Brücke". During an extended study visit to Paris, she continued her studies at the private Académie Ranson. During the National Socialist dictatorship, Heise’s work was defamed as "degenerate" and the artist withdrew into inner emigration.
