A Dutch sterling silver sweetmeat basket which was produced for the export market. The bowl is etched with a floral garland around its circumference, its rim decorated with beadwork and foliate etching. The underside bears an inscription which reads ‘Henry Mason Cutting, from his Godfather, Richmond Talbot’. The basket is decorated with moulded floral garlands around its circumference, hung from pillars which terminate in beasts’ paws. The underside of both the basket and the bowl are stamped with various Dutch marks, including the ‘Y’ year code for 1857. One of the pillars is marked with the lion and key export mark.
