Plate No. 30 from ‘Wapenhandelinghe van Roers Musquetten ende Spiessen’, an important Dutch manual of arms from an unknown author, illustrated by Jacob de Gheyn II with many copper plate engravings. ‘Wapenhandelinghe’ was translated into many languages and spready rapidly throughout Europe, becoming the most important manual of arms for muskets as their use became more widespread.

This plate depicts a musketeer sliding his ramrod back into its slot on the underside of the musket. The soldier’s bandolier can be seen very well, showing his leather purse, priming flask, and many wooden bottles containing pre-measured powder loads.
